Spain v Germany: Cucurella on controversial handball
Euro 2024 quarter-final talking point revisited
Cucurella's handball in the closing stages of extra-time against Germany has been one of the most talked about incidents of Euro 2024. Despite the ball clearly striking his hand, no penalty was awarded and Spain went on to win the match on penalties.
Now, Cucurella has finally broken his silence on the incident, saying that he "didn't mean to" handle the ball and that he was "just trying to block the shot".
The incident occurred in the 105th minute of extra-time, with the scores level at 1-1. Musiala attempted a shot on goal from outside the area, which struck Cucurella on the hand.
The referee waved play on, much to the anger of the German players and fans. Spain went on to win the match 6-5 on penalties, but the incident has continued to be debated.
Cucurella's comments are likely to reignite the debate, but it is unlikely that we will ever know for sure whether or not he meant to handle the ball.
