Fleetwood Town Fight Back to Hold Newcastle U21s to a Draw

Magpies concede late goal to surrender lead

Trialist equalises after Gargan's opener

Newcastle United's Under-21s were held to a 1-1 draw by Fleetwood Town in their latest Premier League 2 Division 2 clash on Monday afternoon. The Magpies took the lead through Michael Gargan early in the second half, but a late equaliser from a trialist denied them victory. Newcastle started the game brightly and created a number of chances in the opening 20 minutes. However, they were unable to find the breakthrough and Fleetwood grew into the game as the half wore on. The Cod Army had the best chance of the first half when Promise Omochere fired wide from close range. Newcastle made a bright start to the second half and took the lead through Gargan in the 50th minute. The midfielder pounced on a loose ball in the Fleetwood box and fired home from close range. The Magpies continued to press for a second goal, but Fleetwood defended resolutely and began to create chances of their own. With just 10 minutes remaining, Fleetwood equalised through a trialist. The forward fired home from close range after a scramble in the Newcastle box. Newcastle pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but Fleetwood held on for a well-deserved point.

Conclusion

This was a disappointing result for Newcastle, who will be frustrated to have conceded a late goal after taking the lead. However, they can take some positives from their performance, particularly in the first half.
